Page 79 Dowry- Sri Raag Mahalla 4- ਹੋਰਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਾਜੁ ਜਿ ਰਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਲਹਿ ਸੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਕਚੁ ਪਾਜੋ ॥ Any other dowry, which the self-willed manmukhs offer for show, is only false egotism and a worthless display. ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਬਾਬੁਲਾ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਮੈ ਦਾਜੋ ॥੪॥ O my father, please give me the Name of the Lord God as my wedding gift and dowry. ||4|| Page 472 Periods- Asa Mahalla 1- ਜਿਉ ਜੋਰੂ ਸਿਰਨਾਵਣੀ ਆਵੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥ As a woman has her periods, month after month, ਜੂਠੇ ਜੂਠਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥ so does falsehood dwell in the mouth of the false; they suffer forever, again and again. ਸੂਚੇ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਬਹਨਿ ਜਿ ਪਿੰਡਾ ਧੋਇ ॥ They are not called pure, who sit down after merely washing their bodies. ਸੂਚੇ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥ Only they are pure, O Nanak, within whose minds the Lord abides. ||2|| Page 473 Women- Asa Mahalla 1- ਭੰਡਿ ਜੰਮੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਨਿੰਮੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਮੰਗਣੁ ਵੀਆਹੁ ॥ From woman, man is born; within woman, man is conceived; to woman he is engaged and married. ਭੰਡਹੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਭੰਡਹੁ ਚਲੈ ਰਾਹੁ ॥ Woman becomes his friend; through woman, the future generations come. ਭੰਡੁ ਮੁਆ ਭੰਡੁ ਭਾਲੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਬੰਧਾਨੁ ॥ When his woman dies, he seeks another woman; to woman he is bound. ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਰਾਜਾਨ ॥ So why call her bad? From her, kings are born. ਭੰਡਹੁ ਹੀ ਭੰਡੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਭੰਡੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ From woman, woman is born; without woman, there would be no one at all. ਨਾਨਕ ਭੰਡੈ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਏਕੋ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥ O Nanak, only the True Lord is without a woman. ਜਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਭਾਗਾ ਰਤੀ ਚਾਰਿ ॥ That mouth which praises the Lord continually is blessed and beautiful. ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲੇ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੨॥ O Nanak, those faces shall be radiant in the Court of the True Lord. ||2|| Page 484 Veil- Asa Kabeer ji- ਰਹੁ ਰਹੁ ਰੀ ਬਹੁਰੀਆ ਘੂੰਘਟੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਾਢੈ ॥ Stay, stay, O daughter-in-law - do not cover your face with a veil. ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਲਹੈਗੀ ਨ ਆਢੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ In the end, this shall not bring you even half a shell. ||1||Pause|| ਘੂੰਘਟੁ ਕਾਢਿ ਗਈ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਗੈ ॥ The one before you used to veil her face; ਉਨ ਕੀ ਗੈਲਿ ਤੋਹਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥੧॥ Do not follow in her footsteps. ||1|| ਘੂੰਘਟ ਕਾਢੇ ਕੀ ਇਹੈ ਬਡਾਈ ॥ The only merit in veiling your face is ਦਿਨ ਦਸ ਪਾਂਚ ਬਹੂ ਭਲੇ ਆਈ ॥੨॥ That for a few days, people will say, 'What a noble bride has come'. ||2|| ਘੂੰਘਟੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਤਉ ਪਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ॥ Your veil shall be true only if ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਕੂਦਹਿ ਅਰੁ ਨਾਚੈ ॥੩॥ You skip, dance and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3|| ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਬਹੂ ਤਬ ਜੀਤੈ ॥ Says Kabeer, the soul-bride shall win, ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਜਨਮੁ ਬਿਤੀਤੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੪॥ Only if she passes her life singing the Lord's Praises. ||4||1||34|| Page 787 Sati- Soohi Mahalla 3- ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੩ ॥ Shalok, Third Mehl: ਸਤੀਆ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਜੋ ਮੜਿਆ ਲਗਿ ਜਲੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥ Do not call them 'satee', who burn themselves along with their husbands' corpses. ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤੀਆ ਜਾਣੀਅਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿ ਬਿਰਹੇ ਚੋਟ ਮਰੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੧॥ O Nanak, they alone are known as 'satee', who die from the shock of separation. ||1|| ਮਃ ੩ ॥ Third Mehl: ਭੀ ਸੋ ਸਤੀਆ ਜਾਣੀਅਨਿ ਸੀਲ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਰਹੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥ They are also known as 'satee', who abide in modesty and contentment. ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸਾਈ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਿਤ ਉਠਿ ਸੰਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੨॥ They serve their Lord, and rise in the early hours to contemplate Him. ||2|| ਮਃ ੩ ॥ Third Mehl: ਕੰਤਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਮਹੇਲੀਆ ਸੇਤੀ ਅਗਿ ਜਲਾਹਿ ॥ The widows burn themselves in the fire, along with their husbands' corpses. ਜੇ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਪਿਰੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਾ ਤਨਿ ਦੁਖ ਸਹਾਹਿ ॥ If they truly knew their husbands, then they suffer terrible bodily pain. ਨਾਨਕ ਕੰਤ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਸੇ ਕਿਉ ਅਗਿ ਜਲਾਹਿ ॥ O Nanak, if they did not truly know their husbands, why should they burn themselves in the fire? ਭਾਵੈ ਜੀਵਉ ਕੈ ਮਰਉ ਦੂਰਹੁ ਹੀ ਭਜਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੩॥ Whether their husbands are alive or dead, those wives remain far away from them. ||3||
